US House F-16 measure expected in Senate

MOJ To Adjust Bail According to Public Expectations

The Ministry of Justice says that in the future, it will take public expectations into account when setting bail for detained suspects. The vow comes after a recent furore over a drunk driver who killed a young man but was granted bail of just 120 thousand NT, which drew a public outcry as well as condemnation from the Interior Minister. Speaking at a press conference today, deputy Justice minister Chen Ming-tang said bail amounts will still be decided on a case-by-case basis, but public expectations will be considered as well. Chen would not comment on whether he felt the 120 thousand NT bail set for this particular case was appropriate, but he said the ministry will be looking into the case as a whole. (EG)
